Back To Links To Whom It May Concern Thank you for your letter of April 18 1have been traveling almost continuously with only a day or two at home between trips, or I would have responded sooner. I do appreciate the concern you express in your letter and am grateful for the opportunity to address your accusations. You mention that I Corinthians 6 and Galatians 6 require you, if you disagree with me, to express your views to me before publishing them. This implies that I erred in not doing so personally with all of those with whom I disagree and mentioned in The Seduction of Christianity. However, I Corinthians 6 tells us not to go to law against a brother before unbelievers. I have not done that, nor would you be guilty of that by writing a critique of what I have said without first discussing it with me. Moreover, this Scripture clearly refers to a personal TRESPASS by one Christian against another, such as in Matthew 18. By holding a view of Scripture different from you, I have not trespassed (sinned) against you; nor do I consider that Schuller, Capps, Cho, Copeland, or anyone else with whose teachings we take issue in the book has trespassed against me personally. We are dealing with publicly taught doctrinal error, not a personal sin of one brother against another. Galatians 6 speaks of someone being overtaken in a FAULT. This again means a sin. That is clear not only from looking up the word, but from what follows: "considering thyself lest thou also be TEMPTED." I'm sorry to say it, brother, but you are misapplying the Scripture. Look up the word tempted and you will see that Paul is talking about someone falling into SIN, not doctrinal error. Neither of the Scriptures you refer to is applicable either to our book or your review of it. In SEDUCTION, we are dealing with public teaching of what I consider to be false doctrine and it must be dealt with publicly, which is what we endeavored to do. I would like to confront these parties face to face publicly as Paul did with Peter in Galatians 2:14, but none of these men is willing to face me publicly and deal with the issues. Perhaps you could arrange for me to meet with some of them on your network to show the church and the world that we can indeed discuss important issues lovingly and earnestly and let the viewers decide for themselves based upon what the Bible says. You take issue with what you call our "definition" of sorcery. In fact, we don't "define" it, but explain the specific meaning we adopt for that word throughout the book: "Any attempt to manipulate reality by various mind-over matter techniques that run the gamut from alchemy and astrology to positive/possibility thinking." You refer to the dictionary and Bible definitions (I don't recall that the Bible "defines" ; it), which you say include the idea of consciously contacting evil spirits in order to exercise supernatural powers. Our usage of the word includes that as well as all other attempts at mind-over matter techniques. You misunderstand what we are saying and indeed the central message of the book, because you apparently are not & Familiar with the fact, though we explain it, that the human mind does not have power to manipulate reality on its own, and in order to do so must operate in conjunction with evil spirits whether the Persons involved intend this or not. » You seem to feel not only that the human mind can manipulate Reality (i.e., "mind-over-matter techniques" are both Possible and normal), but also that Jesus Himself engaged in This practice and taught His disciples to do so. This is what People such as Morton Kelsey, whom we quote, teach: that Jesus was a shaman (witch doctor) who used psychic power (Mind over matter) and that Christians ought to develop ESP, Etc. also. I am surprised that you believe this! If the human mind, as you seem to believe, has the power To manipulate reality (and all sorcery is an attempt to do this, Whether through drugs, a magician's bargain with spirit beings, higher states of consciousness, etc.) then we do not need God. That is the whole point! That is what is wrong with positive/possibility thinking, it is the THINKING that produces the results through some metaphysical laws. It is one thing to say that I was healed because I BELIEVED I WOULD BE HEALED, and something else to say that I BELIEVED GOD WOULD HEAL ME and by His grace He did. Do you not see the difference? If I can make things happen by believing they will happen, then I don't need God at all. That is MIND POWER, what all of the Mind Science cults teach, and that is what Copeland/Cho, et al teach. They specifically state that occultists and other non-Christians can develop the same spiritual laws of the kingdom, the laws of faith and miracles, simply because they are fourth-dimensional spirit beings. That is mind power! Do you not see the difference between believing in a power of the mind and believing in the power of God? The former is under my control the latter is by God's grace and according to His will and for His glory. You accuse us of using a "manipulative definition" of sorcery in order to condemn the innocent. "Manipulative" is a word that connotes deliberate deceit. Are you accusing us of that? Having studied this subject for many years, I believe I have a better grasp of it than you do, so you might at least think it through a bit more carefully before you condemn us as deceivers. We do not accuse those involved in visualization of Jesus or mind-over-matter techniques with having "deliberately sought the assistance of evil spirits" as you suggest. That is the whole point of the book, that innocent people are being led into occult involvement thinking it is psychology, science, or biblical spirituality. We are trying to open their eyes to what they have gotten into without realizing it. A major point we make is that those who try to visualize Jesus are picking up a spirit guide without intending to do so, because Jesus is not going to appear just because they demand it by conjuring up an image of Him in their minds — but this is in fact the standard technique employed by shamans for thousands of years to make contact with a spirit guide. You state that God is the creator and Satan the counterfeiter. That is true, but God didn't create Ouij a boards, crystal balls, and other divination devices, so it would be a poor analogy to say that Christians have the true divination techniques and occultists have counterfeited them. There is no true divination in the Bible for Satan to counterfeit, for there is no biblical divination or visualization to counterfeit. You accuse me of defining true Christianity "by what the others are not." We don't do that at all. We give the biblical teaching of faith, for instance, and contrast it with what Copeland, Capps, et al teach. For example, they clearly teach that faith is a power with which God created the world, that God had faith in the power of His words, and that this force (Copeland says it works just like gravity or electricity) called faith is contained in words and speaking words releases it. God did that in creating the world, and we can use faith just like He does because we are little gods in His class. All of these men teach this. This is pure sorcery, the teaching that Satan originated when he said, "I will be like the most High," and it has been the common lie believed by all occultists, and sorcery is the attempt to make it work. We contrast what these men teach with the biblical teaching of faith, that faith is in God, it is not a power that we release or control by what we think or speak, but it opens our hearts to God's will to become vessels that He can use to His glory There is a big difference between these two views. You accuse us of making such ridiculous associations that if a satanist prays then a Christian dare not. This is a false accusation that shows you either don't understand the book or are being dishonest. We point out OCCULT TECHNIQUES used by occultists that are not biblical and should not be used by Christians. That is far different from what you suggest. You try to compare the manufacture of automobiles, etc. with occult techniques, and again your analogy doesn't fit at all. You say, "Who is the originator of all truth . . . (in) medicine, healing, knowledge, energy, science, etc.?" Again you do us a disservice, either ignorantly or deliberately, by suggesting that we are against medicine, science, etc. Anyone reading the book would know that you are not being true to what we say. It is one thing to say that medicine in the hands of a Hindu is still valid medicine, and that medicine or science are legitimate professions and remedies for Christians . . . and something else entirely to suggest that occult techniques used by Hindus, etc. can be used by Christians for good purposes because God is the author of all truth! Don't you see the difference? Aren't you aware that you are falsely accusing us and twisting the message of the book? Would you suggest that because all truth is God's truth, then it is okay for Christians to use Ouija boards so long as they only use them for contacting God or Jesus? You accuse us of using "guilt by association and innuendo to castigate many Christian leaders." You falsely accuse us, and since I believe you are honest and sincere, I can only conclude that you missed the whole message of the book out of ignorance as to what is really involved in sorcery We do not use guilt by association in any case! Whatever cases of this you can show me in the book, I pledge that we will repent of having done so and will take them out of the book. Far from using guilt by association, we give the quotes and the examples of all of those we name and explain why what they practice is not of God but is out of the occult. Would you call it guilt by association to quote Agnes Sanford that speaking in tongues is communication with the spirits of the dead? You falsely accuse me. You state that we didn't follow the biblical principle of first "going to our brethren and being reconciled." You have gravely misunderstood the biblical principle of publicly correcting doctrinal error. If I have erred in this respect, then how is it that you have done the same? I have a tape of you chairing a meeting at Heritage Village in which I and the book were criticized and none of those, including yourself, who criticized me there before one another had made any attempt to speak to me. Those who have denounced me on radio and TV and in critical reviews such as in Charisma magazine and the "Jamie Buckingham Report" never approached me to discuss my errors with me in private before going public. So if I am wrong, then at least I did it gnorantly because I don't believe the Bible teaches this; but you and the others are doubly guilty because you believe the Bible requires this, yet you did not do it. Furthermore, I have tried to have public or private discussion and have been spurned. I have been asking Paul Crouch for months for this opportunity, and have repeatedly stated on radio and TV my willingness to meet with any of these men, but they have all refused. Why didn't you invite me to that meeting at PTL? Please consider the above prayerfully.
