It is by no means an effort to answer every question or give you all the proof you need. To truly understand, you need to do some research on your own. Introduction Is there anything in Scripture about celebrating a day in honor of a human being? Aren't we to worship only Yahweh? Is this day only a fun celebration of Ireland - a day for wearing green, drinking green beer, etc? Or does it have a deeper meaning? Sacred Origins of Profound Things, Charles Panati, pages 269-270 - "Patrick, apostle of Ireland, is a perfect example of a folklore saint, one whose legend as hero eclipses his real life. For a patron saint of his popularity, Patrick is a figure mixed in contradictions." "He was born about 385 C.E. …He was until age sixteen covetous, licentious, and materialistic; very much a heathen." He was sold into slavery. While working as a shepherd, he renounced his heathen life and went to study in a monastery at Gaul. "He liked to use a three-leaved shamrock to elucidate the mystery of the Trinity: three distinct Godheads sprouting out of a single substantive stem. It became his trademark, and Ireland's." "…He died on March 17, his commemorated 'death day,' in or about the year 461." Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, revised by Ivor H Evans - From page 988 "Shamrock - the symbol of Ireland, because it was selected by St. Patrick to illustrate to the Irish the doctrine of the Trinity. According to the elder Pliny no serpent will touch this plant." From page 487 "The wearing of the green - An Irish patriotic and revolutionary song dating from 1798. Green was the emblematic color of Irish patriots." Funk and Wagnalls New Encyclopedia, 1973, volume 21, pages 297-298 - "Shamrock - any of several trifoliate clovers of the genus Trifolium and of related genera, all of which are native to Ireland. The shamrock was originally chosen as the national emblem of Ireland because of the legend that St. Patrick used the plant to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity. The Irish as good-luck symbols has considered most shamrocks, particularly the small-leaved white clover, T.repens, since earliest times, and this superstition has persisted in modern times among people of many nationalities. Shamrock or various artificial representations of the plant are worn on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th of each year, particularly in those countries having large population groups of Irish descent, such as the United States and Australia." The World Book Encyclopedia, 1975, volume 17, page 46 - "St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17 in honor of the patron saint of Ireland. Many legends have grown up about St. Patrick. One of them is that he used the shamrock to illustrate the idea of the Trinity." "His death on March 17 in about 462, has been observed in America since colonial days. The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick was organized in Philadelphia. In New York, Irishmen of the Roman Catholic and Presbyterian faiths organized another chapter of the society. Observance of the day since 1845 has become a nationwide. It is celebrated in homes, churches, schools, and places of entertainment. Merchants sell special wearing apparel, flowers, shamrocks, and greeting cards. Some cities hold St. Patrick's Day parades." Funk and Wagnalls Standard Dictionary of Folklore, Mythology, and Legend, 1950, page 1004 - "Shamrock - The national emblem of Ireland: chosen because this little plant was used by St. Patrick to illustrate the mystery of the Trinity. It is always worn on St. Patrick's Day, and a little is taken along by emigrants leaving Ireland. To drown the shamrock means to go the rounds dunking on St. Patrick's Day in honor of the shamrock. Seamraog na gceitre gcluas, the four-leafed shamrock, brings luck, possibly because of its Christianized association with an early apotropaic figure enclosed in a circle (triquetra), the ancient Celtic sun wheel." The Wearing of the Green In the 1700's Ireland was under British rule, in the penal law era. They became more and more discontent and formed the 'United Irishmen.' They carried a green banner with a harp on it. Since that time, the 'green' has become one of the symbols of Irish unity and identity." Saint Patrick’s Day "Familiar with the Irish language and culture, Patrick chose to incorporate traditional ritual into his lessons of Christianity instead of attempting to eradicate native Irish beliefs. For instance, he used bonfires to celebrate Easter since the Irish were used to honoring their gods with fire. He also superimposed a sun, a powerful Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross to create what is now called a Celtic cross, so that veneration of the symbol would seem more natural to the Irish." "Green is associated with St. Patrick's Day because it is the color of spring, Ireland, and the shamrock." "Leprechauns are also associated with this holiday. According to the legend, the Leprechaun is an Irish fairy. It is told that the Leprechauns are unsociable, unfriendly, live alone. Also, they make shoes and possess a hidden pot of gold. The legend says if the Leprechaun is caught by a treasure hunter then he must tell where the treasure is, unless the Leprechaun can trick the hunter and vanish." "Patrick is most known the world over for having driven the snakes from Ireland. Different tales tell of his standing on a hill, using a wooden staff to drive the serpents into the sea, banishing them forever from the shores of Ireland. One legend says that one old serpent resisted, but the saint overcame it by cunning….As in many old pagan religions serpent symbols were common, and possibly even worshipped. Driving the snakes from Ireland was probably symbolic of putting an end to that pagan practice." "The legend of the shamrock is also connected with that of the banishment of the serpent tribe from Ireland by a tradition that snakes are never seen on trefoil and that it is a remedy against the stings of snakes and scorpions." Questions And Comments Is there anything anywhere in Scripture about celebrating a day in honor of a human being? Either his life, or the day of his death? What is a saint? Is the Trinity a true doctrine from scripture? Is there anything in Scripture about colors having special meanings? Why would we be celebrating the national holiday that is specific to another country or group of people or religion? Notice the word "superstition" when it comes to the shamrock? Is there anything in Scripture about "luck"? Should we be celebrating a day that has incorporated other pagan rituals into it? The world seems to have gone crazy over Celtic things in the last few years. Notice how many pagan ideas are expressed there? Fire worship. Sun wheel. Do Leprechauns really exist? Or are they figments of someone's imagination? In other words, lies? So many times, the word legend is used. Is there any truth of Yahweh here? This is definitely something that is not mentioned in Scripture as something to be celebrated. Yahweh has given us His laws and His high days to worship. Do we need to go looking in paganism for more to do? Or are we trying to be like the world and see if we can find a way to make this mesh with the ways of Yahweh? It can't be done.
